About Morenci Azurite

The Morenci Mine in Greenlee County, Arizona is a massive copper-molybdenum porphyry system known for producing some of the Southwest’s most dramatic secondary copper minerals. Long-lived supergene oxidation created pockets and seams rich in azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, tenorite, and other copper species. Azurite from Morenci is especially prized for its intense blue coloration, sharp crystal habit, and high contrast against dark, iron-stained matrix.

Historic collecting efforts—especially during the 1970s and early 1980s—preserved many of the finest azurite specimens that would otherwise have been lost to mining operations. These finds included the famous “Electric Blue” pockets, known for their lustrous rosettes and exceptional color saturation.
